The HFB 320 History
The HFB 320 prototype took off in Hamburg-Finkenwerder for its maiden flight on 21 st April 1964. After an in depth test flight period of about three years, the HANSA JET received its German and US type certificate in 1967.
Hallmark of the HFB 320 are its negatively swept wings. A unusual design which was developed at the Junkers aircraft company in Dessau and was only used for two other jet designs.
Hamburger Flugzeugbau GmbH, a predecessor of the present day Airbus, developed and built the HFB 320 as its first jet design in Hamburg-Finkenwerder. Nowadays that is the largest Airbus site in Germany and home to the Airbus A318, A319, A320, A321 and A380 final assembly lines.
More detailed information about the HFB 320's history are to be found on our associations website
Our aircraft – serial number 1025
HFB 320, s/n 1025, was built in 1967 as the fifth production standard HANSA JET. Forty years later, the “Ein HANSA JET fuer Hamburg” charitable association acquired the then decommissioned aircraft from the German Luftwaffe in 2007.
After a complete dismantling to make it fit for the planned trucking, the HANSA JET went on a 700 kilometers long road trip via the Autobahn from the Bavarian city of Manching to Hamburg.
After being stored for another two and a half years at Hamburg Airport, without permission to work on the plane, the HANSA JET could finally be transported in early 2010 to its current location in hangar 104 at Airbus in Hamburg-Finkenwerder. Since then, Airbus supports the project by providing the local premises free of charge.
After careful preparations, including the indexing of a huge number of documentation papers, and after having established working routines in close cooperation with the German aviation authority, the first screw could be officially turned in April 2011.
First working sessions saw the careful dismantling and documentation of the cabin interior. Parts of which have already been forwarded to a local aircraft cabin refurnishing company.
In parallel, the association has erected a small container village next to hangar 104 which houses spares, tools and the project office.
After the technical team have been trained and qualified, all critical structural parts of the aircraft will be checked for corrosion and cracks. This is a crucial step on our challenging road to regain the airworthiness certificate of the HANSA JET, serial number 1025.
